Welcome to stART! I hope that you will enjoy our story and art project and maybe even share your own too! The linky will be open all week.
This week we read Rabbit’s Pajama Party, by Stuart J. Murphy since Emily loves having sleepovers with her cousin. She loved reading about what Rabbit and his friends did at their sleepover. This is a cute rhyming book that talks about all of the fun things that happen when Rabbit has a sleep over party. It is part of the MathStart Series of books and this book focuses on the concept of sequencing. The book has a clear order of events that makes it very easy for talking about what these friends do first, next and last.
Since Emily is completely obsessed with cutting everything and anything out I really had no choice but to do another cutting activity for stART this week :0)
I printed out a some clip art pictures that went along with some of the events in the story and Emily got to work cutting them out.
As we read the story I laid out all the pictures that Emily had cut out and I had her figure out which picture matched what we just read about. After the story she glued them onto a piece of construction paper.
Emily’s finished project. We were able to use our story collage to retell the story using sequencing words, first, next, then, after that, and finally.
Hi! I'm new to stART, but I heard about it from Brimful Curiosities. I actually host a Thursday meme, too, called Read Aloud Thursday in which you can link up your post about your weekly read alouds. My Read Aloud Thursday post this week actually includes an art activity, so I thought I'd join in stART this week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a good way to practice story comprehension.
ReplyDeleteWe missed this MathStart book somehow - it sounds lovely. I have to go and find it. It's great that you are going with what Emily likes to do - she did great with her story sequencing.
ReplyDeleteSo cute. It's great that she enjoys cutting, perfect motor skill practice!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a great book! I will have to keep an eye out for it!! I love the project this week! L loves practicing cutting and would love this!!
ReplyDeleteCute project! I understand the need to just go with whatever they happen to be into at the moment. M loves to cut and paste everything too.
ReplyDeleteI like that this book involves mathematical concepts and obviously has an engaging storyline. Emily is so precise with her cutting. What a great idea to come up with a sequencing activity that involves Emily's love of cutting.
ReplyDeleteJuliette certainly is getting big now. It seems like not all that long ago I was checking in your blog incessantly to see if she had arrived. The wave drum looks like a captivating instrument for children.
My daughter would love to have a sleep over. I don't think I'm up to the challenge yet. Eventually...another awesome job with the scissors skills!
ReplyDeleteMy kids love to cut things too, hence why we have lots of cutting and pasting here too.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great she loves to cut- Baby Girl is not so much into it, which can make some school activities difficult sometimes!
ReplyDelete(P.S. I am so glad to be posting again this week- I missed it!)
What a terrific way to practice sequencing a story. My daughter loves to retell stories as she flips through the book again, but I hadn't thought of giving her her own opportunity to put the story together and retell from that. It's simple but so effective.
ReplyDeleteYour etsy shop looks absolutely delicious! :D
