Straw Painting

Move over Jackson Pollock her Comes EMILY!!!
While I was taking care of Juliette Emily was sitting at the table drinking from a straw and I could hear the sound of bubbles blowing in the cup. This reminded me of a activity I saw in the The Toddlers Busy Book: 365 Creative Games and Activities to Keep Your 1 1/2- to 3-Year-Old Busy , by Trish Kuffner. So I decided to give it a try.

I watered down some tempera paint so that it would spread out easily and cut a few slits in the top of the straw to prevent the paint from going in Emily's mouth. Then I gave Emily all the supplies told her what to do and she was very happy to get right to creating with her straw!

Emily blowing into her straw to splatter the paint.

Emily tried holding the straw different ways to see what would happen. She was very excited to see the paint spatter all around the paper!

I have wanted to do this for a while but I was afraid my kids would drink the paint. I never thought of cutting slits in the top of the straw.

This looks really cool! I'll have to add it to my ever growing list of ways I want to try painting with my kids ;-)

Thanks for the inspiration!

I really have to do this. I've said that on everyone's blog that has done this lately. I love the idea of cutting the slits. Did it really help keep it from going in her mouth??

Ditto for Nicole's question. It looks really great, but I am a little worried about paint getting into her mouth. Thanks for all the inspirational ideas on your blog - I am impressed that you can do all this with a newborn in the house!

Ifyou make the slit open enough the paint didn't get up. I tested myself with water first.
